Levels of DOT Inspections

Level I: North American Standard Inspection

This form of inspection is the most extensive since it includes every aspect of the vehicle and driver, from the brakes to the lights to the load and more. The driver inspection will include checking for a license, an electronic logging device, a record of duty status, hours of service, and the driver vehicle inspection report, all within the date.

Level II: Walk-Around Driver & Vehicle Inspection

This inspection covers almost all of the same components as the first but does not require the inspector to look underneath the vehicle.

Level III: Driver-Only

Level III focuses solely on ensuring that the driver of the vehicle has all of the correct paperwork and credentials to operate the vehicle.

Level IV: Special Inspections

Special inspections are rarely needed but are usually focused on one item of the vehicle or driver and are only performed once, usually for research.

Level V: Vehicle-Only

With a vehicle-specific inspection, the driver is not required to be present, and it is a comprehensive inspection of the vehicle alone. It can even be conducted at the place of business.

Level VI: Enhanced NAS Inspection For Radioactive Shipments

These are specific to vehicles that hold controlled amounts of radiological materials, such as hazardous or medical waste. The inspection is incredibly thorough and includes enhanced criteria and radiological-specific requirements.

Why Are DOT Inspections Necessary?

DOT inspections for commercial vehicles are incredibly important to the safety of others and those driving the vehicles. Commercial vehicles are often much larger and bulkier than everyday vehicles, requiring more practice and training and, in some cases, a specified license. If the vehicle is not safe to operate or the driver is unaware of how to operate it, this can put the driver in danger of causing accidents, damaging property, and hurting others.

While these inspections can be scheduled, commercial vehicles should be prepared to be inspected at any time, as they can be conducted by state troopers as well. Should your vehicle be in violation of any of the criteria in the inspection, they are in danger of being put out of service (OOS), or – if there are multiple violations – the entire fleet will be shut down.
